Frequently asked questions
- What does this do that a template does not?
- The date. Every template has a blank where the end date goes, and that blank is the part people get wrong: one month's notice sent on the 2nd of March does not end on the 2nd of April, it ends on the 30th, because almost every contract ends at a month end. Put in the date you are sending it and the period in your contract and the letter carries the right date.
- Why does it ask whether it ends at a month or a quarter end?
- Because that is what the contract says and it changes the answer by weeks. A month end is the common case. A quarter end — March, June, September, December — is how German tenancies and many insurance policies are written, and it can push the end three months further out than you expected.
- Does the country setting only change the language?
- No, it changes the document. The German letter is set to DIN 5008 so the address lines up with the window of a DIN lang envelope. The Turkish one is a dilekçe, addressed upward to a makam with the closing verb that has to agree. The Korean one is a 사직서, centred and asking to be approved. They are different papers, not one paper translated.
- Is this legal advice?
- No. It is a form, and whether your notice period is what you think it is depends on your contract and on where you live. For anything contested, or where a lot of money turns on the date, ask somebody qualified. Check the letter before you send it.
