Resign from a club or society

How it works

1. Put your membership number in the reference field if you have one. Many clubs file by name instead, so give your name and address in full as well.
2. Take the notice period from the club’s own rules rather than from habit. A club that runs a membership year usually wants notice before that year renews.
3. Keep “ask them to confirm in writing” on. A committee is not a company: the person who reads the letter may not be the person who keeps the register.
4. Download, print, sign, and post it or hand it to the secretary. Keep a copy with the date you sent it.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the right page for a gym?

No — use the gym page. It opens on the three-month notice gyms usually ask for and is written for a gym contract, which is a harder thing to get out of than a club. This page is for a club, a society, an association or a professional body.

The club has no cancellation procedure.

Then a signed, dated letter to the secretary is the procedure. It says who you are, what you are resigning from and from when, which is everything the register needs. Ask for confirmation so there is a record on both sides.

Do I have to give a reason?

No. The extra paragraph is there if you want to give one, and there are clubs where you will want to. A resignation is valid without it.

What about the subscription I have already paid?

That depends on the club’s rules, and they vary far more than a company’s terms do. Ask in the letter rather than assume either way — use the extra paragraph to ask what happens to the remainder of the year.
