Frequently asked questions
- When does the notice period start?
- When the letter arrives, not when you post it. That is the single most expensive detail here: a letter that reaches the landlord on the 4th rather than the 2nd can push the end of the tenancy a whole month further out. Send it early, and send it so that arrival can be proved.
- Three months from the 2nd — what date is that?
- Usually the end of the third month, not the 2nd of it. Put the send date in and the letter carries the date the arithmetic gives rather than the one that feels right.
- Should both tenants sign?
- If both are named on the lease, yes — in most places notice from one of two named tenants does not end the tenancy. The letter leaves a signature line; add a second by hand if you need one.
- Does this work for a fixed-term lease?
- A fixed term usually cannot be ended early with ordinary notice at all; it runs to its end date. This letter is for a rolling or open-ended tenancy, or for giving notice that you will not continue past a fixed term.
- Is it free?
