How it works
- Put your membership number in the reference field.
- Set the notice period from the contract you signed — one or three months, usually.
- Keep “ask them to confirm in writing” on. With a gym you want the confirmation.
- Download, print, sign, and hand it in or post it. Keep a copy either way.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is a gym the contract people most often have to write to?
- Because the membership usually renews itself, the notice period is longer than anybody remembers agreeing to, and cancelling in person tends to become a conversation about staying. A dated letter is not a conversation.
- Should I hand it in or post it?
- Whichever you can prove. Handed in, ask for it to be signed and dated on your copy. Posted, use something that records delivery. The gym's position, if it comes to one, will be that they never received it.
- They say I have to use their own form.
- Often they say that and the contract does not. Unless the contract genuinely specifies a form, a written, signed, dated notice that says what is being cancelled and from when is a notice. If their form is easy to get, use it as well and keep both.
- What if I have moved or cannot train any more?
- Many contracts allow an extraordinary cancellation for a move or on medical grounds, usually with proof and on a much shorter notice. That is a different letter from this one — say so in the extra paragraph and attach the evidence.
- Is it free?
- Yes. The free plan adds a small line at the foot of the sheet; Pro leaves it off.
