How it works
- Choose how far the table runs. Twelve is the usual answer in Britain and America; nine is the Japanese 九九.
- Type a heading if the sheet is for a particular child or class.
- Download and print. The squares — 1 × 1, 2 × 2 and so on — are shaded down the diagonal, and every other row is tinted so the eye can follow one across.
- When the chart has done its work, switch the setting from “chart” to sums and print practice sheets from the same page.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is the diagonal shaded differently?
- Those are the square numbers, and they are the ones most worth knowing by heart — they also split the grid in half, which makes the point that 7 × 8 and 8 × 7 are the same square read two ways.
- Can I get a blank one to fill in?
- Not from this setting, which prints the answers. For blank practice, switch the operation to times tables and print sums instead — that is the version a child writes on.
- Is it big enough to read from across the room?
- A 12 × 12 grid on A4 gives numbers about 8 mm high — fine on a desk or a fridge. For a wall, print it on A3, or use the poster tool to blow the PDF up across several sheets.
- Is it free?
- Yes. The free plan adds a small line at the foot of the sheet; Pro leaves it off.
