Frequently asked questions
- Can a sum come out negative?
- Never. The number being taken away is drawn from nought up to the number it is taken from, so the answer is always nought or more. A generator that does not do this produces sheets a young child cannot finish, and there is no way to tell before printing.
- Does it borrow — taking from the tens column?
- At "up to 20" sometimes, and regularly at 100 and 1000. If you are not ready for borrowing, stay at 10 or 20; if you are teaching it, go to 100, where most sums will need it.
- Does it ever subtract nought?
- It can, because nought is in range, and that is deliberate: a child who has only met sums that change something is briefly thrown by 8 − 0, which is worth meeting on a practice sheet rather than in a test.
- Is every sheet different?
- Yes. Each press builds a new set at the same level.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. The PDF is drawn in your browser and works offline once the page has loaded.
