How it works
- Fill in the landlord, the flat and the date of the move. The landlord is whoever is providing the dwelling, which is the main tenant if you are subletting.
- List everyone who has to register, one to a line, children included.
- Leave the explanation sheet ticked if you want every line described in English on a second page.
- Download the PDF, print it and take it to the landlord to sign. The sheet handed to the office is the German one; the explanation is only for you.
Frequently asked questions
- Who fills this in, me or my landlord?
- The landlord. § 19 BMG puts the duty on whoever provides the dwelling, and it is their signature that makes the sheet worth anything. Filling in what you already know — the address, the date, the names — before handing it over is normal, and it is what this page is for.
- Why is the form in German when the page is in English?
- Because a German registration office reads it. A translated form is not the form. What can be in your language is the explanation of what each line means, and that is printed on a separate second sheet so that nothing you hand in carries a word the office did not ask for.
- Is there an official layout I have to use?
- No. § 19 BMG lists what has to be on it, not how it should look, and every Land and many landlords use their own sheet. What decides acceptance is the particulars: who provided the dwelling and their address, the owner if that is somebody else, the address of the flat, the date of the move and everybody it covers.
- How long do I have?
- You have to register within two weeks of moving in in most of Germany — the exact deadline is set by your Land. Your landlord has two weeks to give you the confirmation, and may not charge you for it.
- Can it be used for moving out?
- Yes. Switch it to moving out. A confirmation of departure is asked for when you deregister, which matters if you are leaving Germany rather than moving within it.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. The PDF is made in this page, on your device. Nothing about who lives where goes anywhere.
