Frequently asked questions

Does a landlord have to give one?

In France, yes, free of charge, whenever the tenant asks — article 21 of the law of 6 July 1989. The landlord may not charge for it and may not refuse. A tenant who needs one for a housing benefit claim or a new lease is entitled to it.

Why must rent and charges be separate?

Because they are treated differently. Charges are a provision against actual costs and are reconciled once a year; rent is not. A receipt showing one total does not let either side check the reconciliation, which is why the form has two lines.

Why twelve at once?

Because it is one receipt per month for the same flat, the same tenant and usually the same amount, and filling the same form twelve times is the actual work. Set the first month and the count and each one comes out on its own page, ready to sign.

What if only part of the rent was paid?

Then it is a reçu, not a quittance, and the sheet carries the standard line saying that a quittance cancels any earlier partial receipts. For a part payment, put the amount actually received and say so in the note rather than issuing a full quittance.

Is it free?

Yes. The free plan adds a small line at the foot of the sheet; Pro leaves it off.
