Frequently asked questions
- What is this for?
- It is how someone with no lease and no bills in their name proves where they live. A préfecture, a CAF office, a bank or a driving licence application all ask for a justificatif de domicile; if you are staying with family or a friend, this signed statement from them is what stands in for one.
- What has to go with it?
- A copy of the host's identity document, a copy of yours, and one of the host's own proofs of address dated within the last three months — an energy bill, a rent receipt or a tax notice. The sheet prints that list at the foot, because an attestation handed in on its own is the commonest reason it comes back.
- Does it need to be handwritten?
- No. It needs to be signed by hand. A typed and printed attestation with a real signature is accepted everywhere; some offices ask for the signature to be accompanied by a handwritten line, and there is a free field for that.
- Is there any risk in signing one?
- Yes, and the sheet says so on it. Article 441-7 of the code pénal makes a false sworn statement an offence punishable by a year's imprisonment and a €15,000 fine. Sign one only for somebody who genuinely lives with you.
- How long is it valid?
- There is no expiry written into it, but the proof of address attached to it must be under three months old, so in practice the pack ages at the same rate. Reprint it with a fresh date when you need it again.
- Is it free?
