Frequently asked questions

Why does a Korean résumé need its own format?

Because it is a form rather than a document. Korean employers expect particulars in a boxed block at the top and then 학력, 경력 and 자격 as tables with fixed columns — not the prose-and-bullets layout a Western CV uses. Sending the wrong shape reads as not having applied in Korea before.

Why is there no field for height, marital status or family?

Because 채용절차법 제4조의3 forbids an employer requiring a candidate to write those down: physical particulars such as height and weight, place of origin, marital status, assets, and the education, occupation or wealth of parents and siblings. Old HWP templates still have those boxes. This one does not.

Is a photograph required, or banned?

Neither, and this gets reported wrongly both ways. A photo is not on that statute's prohibited list, so private employers may still ask for one and many do. Public bodies hiring blind may not. It is an option here for that reason — 3 × 4 cm is the usual size.

Why not just use the HWP file?

Because HWP needs Hangul Word Processor, which is normal in Korea and almost nowhere else. If you are applying from outside Korea, or on a machine without it, a PDF in the right shape is the thing you actually need.
