What is an autocertificazione?

A declaration you sign instead of producing a certificate. Since the DPR 445/2000, a public office may not ask a citizen for a certificate it could look up itself — residence, birth, citizenship, household, qualifications — so you declare the fact and the office verifies it. That is a right, not a favour, and offices that hand you a blank form are following the same law.

Article 46 or article 47?

Article 46 is for facts the public administration already holds: residence, birth, citizenship, a degree. Article 47 is the dichiarazione sostitutiva dell'atto di notorietà, for anything only you can attest — that you are the heir, that a document is a true copy, that you have not received something. The page prints the right one for what you chose rather than putting both on and hoping.

Do I have to attach an ID?

Yes, unless you sign it in front of the official taking it. A plain photocopy is enough — article 38. Forgetting it is the commonest reason one is handed back.

Will a bank or a landlord accept one?

They may, but they do not have to. The obligation to accept falls on public bodies and on companies running public services. A private party is free to insist on the certificate itself, and banks often do.

What happens if I declare something untrue?

Article 76 makes it a criminal offence, and the declaration says so on its face — that sentence is what turns the sheet into a declaration in lieu of a certificate rather than a note. Any benefit obtained on a false declaration is also forfeited.
