How it works
- Choose the occasion: the wording, the knot and the colours are set to match it.
- Type the giver’s name, or up to three names side by side.
- Choose the paper — A4 for a small box, B4 or A3 for a larger one.
- Download the PDF, print it and wrap it round the gift with the cord across the middle.
Frequently asked questions
- Which knot goes with what?
- A bow (蝶結び) can be untied and tied again, so it is used for anything one would be glad to see repeated: seasonal gifts, a birth, thanks. A knot tied fast (結び切り) is for a wedding, for getting well and for condolences, where a repeat is the last thing one wishes for.
- What is the little folded piece in the corner?
- The noshi itself — dried abalone, once. It marks a happy gift, so it is left off for condolences and for anything to do with illness.
- Inside the wrapping or outside?
- Outside (外のし) shows what the gift is for, which suits a gift handed over or one among many; inside (内のし) is quieter and suits 内祝. Either way the sheet is the same.
- Is it free?
- Yes, and the sheet never carries our footer, since it is wrapped round a present.
