Frequently asked questions
- What is a 誓約書 for?
- It is a one-sided written undertaking, not a contract: one person states what they will or will not do, and signs. Japanese employers ask new staff for one about confidentiality, schools ask parents for one, and landlords ask tenants for one about noise or subletting. The point is that it is in writing and sealed.
- How is it different from a 契約書?
- A 契約書 is an agreement between two parties, both signing, with obligations each way. A 誓約書 goes one way — you undertake something, the other side undertakes nothing — which is why it is one page and why only one person signs it.
- Do I need a seal?
- In practice yes, in Japan. A signature alone is legally sufficient for most purposes, but a 誓約書 handed in without a 印 tends to come back. The template leaves the circle for it; our seal maker will draw one if you need to see what yours looks like first.
- Does it need revenue stamps?
- Usually not. A plain undertaking with no money in it is not a taxable document. If it acknowledges a debt or a payment, it becomes one — use the 借用書 form for that, which leaves room for the stamp.
